The Brighton Transcendental Meditation® centre has been teaching the core TM® course for more than 30 years. We cover all of West Sussex, from Worthing to Haywards Heath, Gatwick, Crawley and Horsham, and across to Lewes. Our next non-residential course is scheduled for May 6th 2017.
What are the benefits of Transcendental Meditation?
TM brings deep physiological rest to the system. It can make your life less stressed, calmer, more enjoyable and balanced. How is TM done?
TM is super easy to practise. Just 15 or 20 minutes twice a day sitting quietly with eyes closed. All you need is somewhere to sit. Anyone can do it, even children. It is taught in a systematic 4 day course at our centre in Brighton. Each day last about 2 hours. To find out more, come to one of our free introductory presentations listed below. Some common questions about Transcendental Meditation
How long before I notice the benefits?
TM starts working on the first day you learn. It's not something that takes years to master. The benefits build over time if you practise regularly, as the stress and fatigue are released from your body and mind.
Can anyone do it?
Yep! Anyone. If you can think, you can do TM. All you need is somewhere to sit and close your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes.
Is TM religious?
TM is not religious in terms of requiring faith, devotion or belief. You also do not need to change your philosophy, or adapt your behaviour in any way. TM is for the everyday person who wants more enjoyment out of life, less stress and greater appreciation of the world they live in. Have a look at some of the more famous folks who practise TM and you will see the variety and individuality of their different characters.
What's involved? How does it work?
A trained teacher gives you a mantra that is selected for you. This acts as a vehicle for your mind to settle down and experience progressively quieter levels of thinking until ultimately it becomes silent. This is profoundly restful and energizing for both mind and body. No concentration or hard work is required.
What if I have too many thoughts or can't control my mind?
An active mind is no barrier to effective meditation. TM is easy because it makes use of a built in tendency of the mind to move towards more happiness, more growth, and more fulfillment. So no control is necessary. It's just like taking a dive off the high board; you just set up the initial angle, and then let go. Gravity does the rest. People are often surprised at how simple and effective the technique is.
There seem to be many different people and organizations teaching TM. What's that all about?
Like many things that are popular, imitators sometimes step in to offer alternatives. TM is taught in every country throughout the world under the arm of a global charity. All teachers are required to adhere to tried and tested standards of teaching. This means wherever and whenever you learn, if you go with the official Transcendental Meditation body in your country, you can be assured you are in good hands. Any other organisations, charities or individuals professing to be independent or alternative may or may not be teaching TM. Caveat emptor, as they say!
Will TM conflict with my other practice or my religion?
Not at all. Whether it's your yoga, Tai Chi, mindfulness, or prayer, there is no conflict. TM is a systematic approach that can only enhance your appreciation and enjoyment of the different aspects of your life.
Why learn with the offfical Transcendental Meditation?
Every course is fairly small (rarely more than 7 people in any one group) so you get tailored tuition and attention. After the core 4-day course, the teachers are available to support you (at no cost) in whatever way you might need. You also have access to a global community and can participate in many TM activities around the world (if you wish). In Brighton & Hove we hold fortnightly drop in meditations, weekend retreats, and social events in the city.
Will I lose my edge or creativity?
In the words of a musician from Brighton, practising TM made him "more himself". The creative faucet flowed as it had done but a lot of the stress and anger dissipated.
