Donovan & Friends Perform Benefit Concert

Legendary British folk-rock-pop singer and poet, Donovan, known for hits such as ‘Mellow Yellow’ and 'Sunshine Superman', headlined a benefit concert for the David Lynch Foundation on Friday, March 19 in Los Angeles. He was joined on stage by his daughter Astrella, now a singer and musician, in a show hosted by award-winning Hollywood movie director, David Lynch, and Matthew St Patrick from cult TV series, Six Feet Under.

Donovan has practised Transcendental Meditation for over 40 years and famously joined the Beatles and the Beach Boys on their 1968 trip to Rishikesh in India where they stayed at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

He told the American TV show, Good Day L.A., on which he performed with Astrella on Wednesday,

“The Beatles and I brought back from India the lost art of meditation. Now, with David Lynch, we pass it on to thousands of students worldwide. Join us to help save the world.”

Together with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Moby, Sheryl Crowe, Jerry Seinfeld and other artists, Donovan has helped raise over $1 million in a series of concerts for the David Lynch Foundation, which has already enabled 100,000 at-risk youths to learn Transcendental Meditation.

Donovan, who was born in Scotland but grew up in Manchester, has a long-term plan to create a university, where many people would practise Transcendental Meditation together, in either Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Other guests at this weekend's L.A. show included Jack Maness from Sublime, The Global Sound Lodge featuring Lanny Cordola and Matt Sorum of Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver and The Cult, Amrita Sen and more.

Donovan was one of the few artists to collaborate on songs with Beatles Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison. Donovan has played with folk greats Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and and Bob Dylan, as well as rock musicians Jimmy Page, Jon Bonham and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, and Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones.

Recently Donovan completed the successful album “Beat Cafe” as well as a new box set, “Try For The Sun: The Journey of Donovan,” and a book, “The Autobiography of Donovan: The Hurdy Gurdy Man” (Arrow Books).
